Threaded-End and Button-End Grip Bodies
Instron Split Insert Tensile Grips are designed for safe, high-volume production testing of shoulder-end or button-head machined specimens. Engineered with an operator focus, the split insert style tensile grips are easy to install, offer quick change inserts for standard specimen sizes, and promote efficient static testing of a wide range of metals and alloys. A preferred solution for the testing of high-strength, high-toughness materials that may damage or cause excessive wear to traditional grip arrangements.
The Split Insert Tensile Grips are designed to comply with ASTM E8, ASTM A370, ASTM A48 and GOST 1497 (Type III specimen). Consult Instron for compliance with other standards or unique customer specifications.
It is recommended that a spherical tension adapter package is used for installation of this grip to maximize performance and enhance axial alignment. The Insert Holders will mount directly on the tension rod frame interface, and the interchangeable split inserts directly to the holder. The test specimen is inserted into the precision machined contoured inserts for quick, repeatable testing without additional pre-test adjustment. The twist lock enclosure fully encases the split inserts so no worry of the test specimen ejecting from the tensile grip at break.
The threaded end holders mount directly onto the threaded portion of spherically seated tension rods. A threaded end specimen is then fitted into each threaded end holder. Once the specimen is positioned correctly in the two threaded end holders, the operator may begin the test.
Principle Of Operation
The shoulder end holder mounts directly onto the threaded portion of spherically seated tension rods. Intended to reduce loading time, the shoulder end holder has a front-open, split-sleeve design. After placing the specimen into the open split sleeve, the operator then places the second split sleeve over the specimen and brings the external sleeve over the assembly. As the operator brings the external sleeve over the specimen and twists it, the mechanism locks the specimen into place.
As the pre-test load force is applied to remove slack between the grip and specimen, the spherically seated tension rods will automatically straighten the specimen if it is placed off-center. This feature ensures the tension from the frame is applied to the whole of the specimen, throughout the duration of the test.
Shoulder end holders are designed to comply with ASTM E8, ASTM A370, or ASTM A48, and other international standards, and can be made to customer specifications. A wide range of possible button head, shank hole and chamfer/radius dimensions ensures compatibility with a large variety of specimen sizes.
