What testing standards does the 2810-005 support?

The Instron Coefficient of Friction Fixture is designed to test in accordance with ASTM D1894 and ISO 8295, the two most widely used standards for measuring static and kinetic coefficient of friction in plastic film and sheeting.

Will this fixture work with the testing system I already have?

The fixture mounts using Instron's standard Type D base grip adapter and connects to the load cell via a Type C coupling, so it's adaptable to most standard universal testing instruments — not just Instron systems with matching fittings. Check with our applications team to confirm compatibility with your specific frame.

Can I test both sides of my material in one setup?

Yes. The test specimen can be mounted to the sled, the table, or both, depending on what your standard or material requires — giving you flexibility to test film-on-film, film-on-metal, or other combinations.

Is this fixture suitable for high-speed friction testing?

No — the 2810-005 is designed for tensile-mode (standard-speed) testing only and is not intended for high-rate or high-speed friction applications. If your application requires higher-speed testing, let us know and we can help identify the right alternative.

What is coefficient of friction testing and why does it matter for plastic film?

Coefficient of friction (COF) testing measures how easily one surface slides against another — in this case, how easily plastic film or sheeting slides against itself or another material. It matters because friction affects how film behaves in real-world use: too much friction can cause jamming or tearing during high-speed packaging and manufacturing processes, while too little can cause slipping, poor stacking stability, or product mishandling. Manufacturers test COF to ensure film performs consistently on packaging lines, in shipping, and in end-use applications.

What's the difference between static and kinetic coefficient of friction?

Static coefficient of friction measures the force needed to start moving one surface against another from a resting position — essentially, how much resistance there is to overcome before sliding begins. Kinetic (or dynamic) coefficient of friction measures the force needed to keep the surfaces moving once sliding has already started. Static friction is typically higher than kinetic friction, and both values matter for different reasons: static friction relates to how film behaves when stationary (like on a stack or roll), while kinetic friction relates to how it behaves once in motion (like running through packaging equipment).

What equipment do you need to test coefficient of friction on plastic film?

At minimum, you need: a universal testing system (or equivalent frame) capable of controlled, constant-speed horizontal pulling; a coefficient of friction fixture, which includes a weighted sled and a flat test table or plate; a load cell sensitive enough to accurately capture low-force readings; and a tow line connecting the sled to the load cell. You'll also need testing software to run the test and calculate results — Instron's Bluehill® Universal software includes a pre-built ASTM D1894 test method, so you can start testing right out of the box or customize it to match your specific procedure.

工作原理

牵引线通过导向滑轮将滑块连接到小量程载荷传感器。随着横梁移动，滑块在工作台上被拉动，载荷传感器在整个测试过程中记录力值：
